Gasket sealing tips
A thermostat gasket seals the thermostat housing to the engine, so even a small leak at this joint lets coolant escape or air enter the system. Gaskets are usually replaced whenever the housing is removed, since an old gasket often takes a permanent set and no longer seals evenly.
Clean both surfaces thoroughly before fitting, removing old gasket residue with a plastic scraper rather than metal to avoid scoring the housing. Place the new gasket in the correct orientation, and install the housing bolts evenly so the seal compresses squarely.
On older six-cylinder Jeeps the thermostat, housing and water pump are often in the same service area. Inspect the housing for cracks and corrosion while the cooling system is drained, then refill and bleed the system before a test drive.
