Working on early CJ transmissions
Early CJ transmissions were built with simpler components than later Jeeps, and a T90 rebuild often involves replacing wear items in a fixed order. Needle bearings and thrust washers can be damaged by metal debris, and snap rings can fatigue or bend during removal. Gaskets should never be reused, since a reused gasket is a common source of leaks after reassembly.
Before taking the case apart, drain the fluid and clean the exterior thoroughly. Lay out parts in order, label shafts and gears, and check each part for wear before reinstalling. Early Jeep transmissions often benefit from fresh seals and bushings, which can be replaced at the same time when access is open.
