Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 97-2044-004 is a Big Spline chromoly Birfield CV style inner axle shaft with 30 splines for the driver side of the front axle on 1975–1984 Toyota Land Cruiser models, including the FJ40.
This driver-side long shaft moves to 30 splines for FJ40 builds that have outgrown the 27 spline shaft, and it measures 28.937 in overall on the Toyota 9.5 inch axle. It needs an aftermarket CV joint, so plan to buy that joint alongside it. It is made for the 75-84 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser.
An aftermarket CV joint with 30 splines is the other half of this upgrade. Together the Big Spline shaft and joint give a larger diameter at the spline section, which is where inner shafts commonly fail under heavy loads and big tires. G2 does not publish a strength figure for the shaft, so the claim is general rather than measured. Owners should confirm the hub and housing clearances on their FJ40 before assembly.

Choosing a spline upgrade
Moving from 27 to 30 splines changes more than the shaft. The joint, the differential side gear and the hub all have to match the new count, so the upgrade is best planned as one set. Owners who run larger tires or push the driveline harder usually want the spline area to carry more load, which is the reason for this step.
Before assembly, check axle housing clearance and the stack of the new joint, since a joint that sits close to the housing can bind. Review the hub bearings and seals at the same time, because the upgrade is most useful when the rest of the front end can take the added load. A shop familiar with FJ40 axles can confirm clearances quickly.
