Overview
The G2 Dana 44 Ford F-250 Front Chromoly Axle Kit, part 98-2033-007, is a front axle kit for the Ford F-250 with a Dana 44 front axle. It is made for 1969 to 1979 F-250 trucks.
G2 builds these axles from high tensile 4340 chrome/nickel alloy, designed for off-road driving, larger tires and the high torque of low-geared drivetrains. Extra material around the U-joint cap area is meant to prevent distortion that can damage bearings.
Key features
- Forged 4340 chromoly alloy
- Extra material in the yoke area around the U-joint cap
- 30 spline
- Uses the 5-760X U-joint
Front axle upgrade basics
A front axle with a heavier forging is usually fitted when a truck is used on rougher ground or with larger tires, since the axle sees more torque and more side loading. Changing tire size can also change the gearing feel, so the axle choice should be considered alongside the rest of the drivetrain. Any upgrade is easiest to plan when the existing shafts, joints and differential are inspected first.
The U-joint and yoke are the parts most often replaced alongside a front axle. A worn joint can cause vibration and clunking, and an overstressed yoke can wear the seals. Check the joint for play, the yoke for wear, and the differential for leaks before reassembly.
- Check joints for play
- Inspect the yoke for wear
- Look at the differential seal
