Description

Overview

The G2 96-2033-1-30AUB is a Dana 44 rear axle upgrade kit with an Auburn Locker. It uses 30 spline chromoly shafts and is for Jeep YJ, XJ and TJ models from 1987 to 2006, with each model limited to the years of its chassis code.

The kit is dual drilled for 5 lug wheel patterns of 5 x 4.5 and 5 x 5.5. The Auburn Locker shifts from limited slip to spool on the fly.

G2 says its rear axle kits are made from high tensile alloy steels, forged and heat treated for maximum strength. Big spline options use a larger shaft diameter, which G2 says can handle much higher torsional loads than the stock diameter.

The kit is not for disc brake applications. For disc brake use, G2 lists part G/296-2045-1-30 instead.

Key features

  • 30 spline chromoly shafts
  • 5 lug dual drilled 5 x 4.5 and 5 x 5.5 wheel patterns
  • Auburn Locker that shifts from limited slip to spool on the fly
  • Forged and heat treated alloy steel
  • Drum brake applications only

Gears, lockers and brake type

A locker changes how an axle behaves on pavement. When both wheels are locked to turn together, tight turns can cause tire scrub and a hop, so the locker is most useful when traction is needed. Many drivers keep the locker in a mode that suits daily driving and engage it for trail work.

Shafts, bearings and the carrier are worth inspecting when an axle is rebuilt. Look for wear on the spline ends and for leaks at the seals. Because the kit is for drum brakes, confirm your brake type before installing it, since disc brake setups need a different part.

  • Check the brake type before ordering
  • Inspect spline ends for wear during a rebuild
  • Look for leaks at axle seals after heavy use
  • Keep axle fluid at the level the axle requires

Questions & Answers

Does this kit fit a 1996 Jeep Cherokee XJ?

Yes. The fitment data covers the Cherokee (XJ) from 1987 to 2001, so a 1996 model is within the listed years. Confirm the brake type is drum before ordering.

Can I use this kit with disc brakes?

No. The kit is not for use with disc brakes. For disc brake applications, G2 lists part G/296-2045-1-30 instead, so check your brake type before ordering this kit.

Do I need to keep the retainer plates?

Yes on 1989 and older vehicles, where the factory retainer plates must be reused. Check the model year before ordering, since the kit covers 1987 to 2006 Jeep YJ, XJ and TJ models.

Does a locker make the vehicle harder to drive on pavement?

It can. A locker drives both wheels at the same speed, which can cause tire scrub and a hop in tight turns. Use it when traction is needed and return to limited slip or open use for everyday driving.
