Driver side hardtop support care
The driver side liftgate support carries part of the hatch weight every time the hardtop glass is raised, so it works hardest when the hatch is opened from a standing position. Over time the gas cylinder can lose pressure, leaving the hatch to sag or drop too quickly. Check the cylinder for oil seepage at the rod, since that is a clear sign the seal has given way.
When replacing the part, support the hatch first and remove the old support from the upper ball stud before the lower one. Inspect the bracket on the body for cracks or bent tabs, and clean the ball studs so the new support seats without force. Hand tighten the mounting fasteners and test the hatch at several heights before closing it fully.
Keep the support’s rubber boots and ball sockets clean and free of road grime, because grit at the joints speeds up wear. A hatch that jerks or sticks partway through its travel usually points to a worn joint rather than a weak cylinder.
