Belt tension and idlers
An idler pulley keeps the belt on a fixed path so the belt wraps the other pulleys correctly. Because it has no drive load, most of its wear comes from the bearing. A pulley with rough or noisy bearings can make the belt chirp, and a pulley with play can let the belt walk off its track.
