Seal replacement basics
A shift rod seal keeps lubricant inside the transfer case where the shift rod passes through the housing. When it hardens or cracks, fluid can seep out and leave the area oily, and the level inside the case can drop over time. A leaking seal is usually a small repair, but it is worth fixing before the fluid level becomes a problem.
Replacing the seal means removing the shift rod and cleaning the bore. Check the rod for pitting or grooves, since a damaged rod can tear a new seal. Use fresh lubricant of the type your transfer case requires, and check the level after a short drive.
- Clean the bore before fitting the seal
- Check the shift rod for grooves
- Recheck the fluid level after a short drive
