Protecting the wheel wells
Rear inner fenders shield the wheel well area from splash, mud and debris that would otherwise reach the body and rear components. A solid panel reduces how much grit gets into the wheel well, which helps keep nearby parts cleaner and easier to inspect.
Aluminum is lighter than steel and resists corrosion well, but it can dent or crack if struck by rocks or hard impacts. After any trail outing, look for dents, cracked welds or loose fasteners, and tighten them before the next run. Check that the panel still clears the tire at full steering lock.
If you run larger tires or a lift, recheck clearance because the inner fender may need trimming or spacing adjustments. Clean the panel with mild soap and water, and keep the mounting points free of mud so they can be inspected easily.
