What a pad and rotor kit contains
A kit typically contains rotors and pads for one axle, front or rear, though some listings cover both. Calipers are usually not included, and several Power Stop truck-and-tow kits say so explicitly. Buying matched parts saves guessing at compatibility and lets the pads and rotors bed in together.
Kits are sold for specific vehicles, so rotor diameter, thickness, hat height and bolt pattern all match the application.
Rotor styles
Rotors in these kits come in a few forms:
- Plain or OE-style rotors suit a stock replacement and quiet street driving.
- Slotted rotors help clear gas and debris from the pad surface.
- Drilled rotors add holes that also vent gas and water, though they can be more prone to cracking under severe heat in some uses.
- Drilled and slotted rotors combine both and are common in the truck-and-tow and upgrade kits listed here.
Coating, such as zinc plating, reduces surface rust on the rotor hat and vanes, which is useful on vehicles exposed to moisture and road salt.
Pad compounds
Pad material shapes noise, dust and heat tolerance. Ceramic pads are generally quieter with lighter dust, and suit daily driving. Metallic or semi-metallic pads, like the high-friction types in the towing kits, grip well at higher temperatures but can be noisier and wear rotors faster. If you tow, carry heavy loads or drive steep grades, a compound rated for heat is a reasonable choice.
Do not mix compounds or brands side to side on the same axle.
Installation and break-in
Brakes are safety critical. If you are not experienced with brake work, have a professional shop install the kit. Replace or inspect hardware, clean hub faces, check for caliper slide freedom, and tighten the caliper bracket and wheel nuts to the specified torque.
New pads and rotors need bedding in. Follow the manufacturer's break-in procedure, which usually involves a series of moderate stops followed by a cooldown. Confirm fitment for your exact year, make, model, trim and brake package, since some models offer more than one rotor size, and check the manufacturer's specifications. Larger tires and heavy bumpers or winches add braking load, so consider that when choosing a kit.
Pairing parts and common mistakes
Pads and rotors work as part of a system, so look at the rest of the brakes while the wheels are off. Inspect the brake hoses for cracks and bulges, check that caliper slide pins move freely, and consider fresh fluid if it is dark or more than a couple of years old, since old fluid absorbs moisture and lowers its boiling point.
- Clean rust and dirt from the hub face so the new rotor sits flat, because runout shows up later as pedal pulsation.
- Do not touch the friction surface with greasy hands, and wipe rotors with brake cleaner if the maker advises it.
- Do not use an impact wrench for final wheel nut tightening.
- If you tow, pair the kit with brake fluid and lines in good condition, and consider a brake controller setup that matches the trailer.

Disc Brake Pad and Rotor Kits FAQ
Do I replace rotors every time I replace pads?
Not always, but it is common to do both, especially if rotors are thin, warped or grooved. Matching new pads to new rotors gives even contact and shorter break-in. Always measure against the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor.
Are drilled and slotted rotors better?
They can help in towing and heavy-use situations by venting gas and heat. For ordinary street driving, plain rotors work fine. Choose based on how you use the vehicle, not appearance alone.
Do these kits include calipers?
Usually not. Many listings state they are without calipers. Read the product details and confirm whether your calipers need service or replacement, including slide pins and hardware.
How do I bed in new brake pads?
Follow the instructions packed with the kit. A common method is several moderate stops from medium speed without coming to a full stop, then a cooldown drive. Avoid hard stops while the pads are fresh.
