Electrical setup before install
A 12V winch draws from the vehicle’s electrical system, so the battery, alternator and wiring need to be ready for the load. Check that the battery is healthy and the charging system is working before a long pull. Heavy current can warm cables quickly, so keep the wiring short, secured and protected from heat and moving parts. A properly sized fuse or breaker protects the circuit when the motor draws high current.
The wire rope and roller fairlead carry the load into the mount, so the bumper or frame mount matters as much as the winch itself. Inspect the cable, fairlead and hook before each use, and replace any cable with kinks or broken strands. For long pulls, watch the battery charge and motor temperature readings on the remote, and let the winch cool when it runs warm.
