Description

Overview

The Power Stop Z36-459 front brake pads are Z36 Truck and Tow disc brake pads for 1990–2000 Chevrolet and GMC C3500 and K3500 trucks and 1994–1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500.

For hill driving, trailer towing and loaded trucks, the Z36 is an upgrade over standard pads. Its friction coefficient is 17 percent higher than OE pads.

Key features

  • Carbon and ceramic friction formula
  • Thermal scorched finish
  • Chamfered and slotted like the OE pads
  • Powdercoated backing plate
  • Noise insulating shims
  • Hi-temp lubricant included
  • Direct fit with the stock caliper, front position

Towing and downhill braking

Brake pads absorb the heat from every stop, and the load on them climbs quickly when a truck carries cargo or pulls a trailer. Long downhill grades are the hardest test, because the brakes work for a sustained period rather than a single stop. A pad with a friction compound suited to heavier loads helps the system keep its bite under those conditions, but the rotors, calipers and fluid must be in good shape to get the benefit.

Pads are usually replaced in pairs on the same axle, and the rotors should be measured and inspected at the same time. Warning signs of worn pads include a squeal from the wear indicator, a pulsing pedal, a grinding noise, or stopping distances that seem longer than before. Glazed or scored rotors reduce the value of any upgraded pad, so resurface or replace them when they fall below minimum thickness.

  • Measure rotor thickness and runout before fitting new pads
  • Bed in new pads with a series of moderate stops
  • Keep lubricant off the friction surface
  • Replace old brake fluid if it is dark or contaminated

Questions & Answers

Which vehicles does the Power Stop Z36-459 fit?

The Z36-459 front pads fit 1990–2000 Chevrolet and GMC C3500 and K3500 trucks and 1994–1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500. Confirm fit for your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Is the Z36-459 a front or rear brake pad?

Front. The Z36-459 is a front-position pad made to work with the stock caliper and is a direct-fit upgrade for the vehicles it covers.

Can the Z36-459 pads handle trailer towing?

Power Stop offers the Z36-459 as part of the Z36 Truck and Tow range, meant for trucks and SUVs with higher gross vehicle weights. The Z36-459 pad bite is intended to help avoid high temperature brake fade.

How can I tell the pads need replacing?

Replace them when the friction material is worn close to the backing plate or when a wear indicator squeals. Pulsing, longer stopping distances, or a grinding noise are also signs to inspect the pads and rotors right away.

Should the rotors be replaced along with the pads?

Not always, but they should be measured first. Rotors below minimum thickness, warped, or heavily scored will reduce pad performance, so inspect them at the same time and resurface or replace them as needed.
