Steel wheels and lug nut seats
Lug nuts clamp the wheel to the hub, so the seat where the nut touches the wheel matters as much as the thread. Steel wheels are often used with conical or ball-style seats, and the nut has to match that seat to hold evenly. A mismatched seat can loosen over time and damage the wheel bore.
Powder coat finishes are applied over the nut body and can wear at the contact surfaces. Inspect the nuts periodically for chips, rounded hex edges and rust at the seat. Clean the seat area before installing so dirt does not prevent the nut from seating flat.
