Overview
The G2 Axle and Gear 4-TJ-456 is a 4.56 front and rear ring and pinion kit for non-Rubicon Jeep Wrangler TJ models. It pairs a Dana 30 front axle with a Dana 35 rear axle.
Wrangler owners often choose 4.56 gearing after fitting larger tires, because the shorter ratio restores acceleration and hill-climbing ability. This kit supplies both gear sets plus matched Master Installation Kits. The steel is computer heat treated 8620 that is double shot peened and double lapped, with a limited lifetime warranty from G2.
The TJ fitment shown here comes from the TJ in the product title; G2 states no narrower years.

Before you gear up
Changing ring and pinion gears is one of the bigger jobs a Wrangler owner can take on, and it touches both ends of the driveline at once. Gear ratio sets how many times the driveshaft turns for each turn of the wheels, so a numerically higher ratio trades top-end cruising speed for low-speed pull. Before buying, decide whether your tire size and mix of pavement and trail driving justify that trade.
Front and rear gears should be replaced as a matched set, and the installation kits belong with their own gears. Plan for fresh gear oil in both differentials after the swap, and inspect the carrier bearings, pinion seal and axle seals while the housings are open. Worn bearings or a leaking seal found during the job are cheaper to fix then than after the gears are broken in.
- Check that the existing axle housings match the gear set before ordering
- Budget for a shop with gear setup tools if you do not have them
- Note backlash and pinion depth readings before disassembly
- Replace the pinion seal and axle seals during the job

Vehicle fitment
The 4-TJ-456 has no vehicle list, but its title names the TJ. That is the chassis code for the Jeep Wrangler (TJ), built 1997-2006, and G2 limits the kit to non-Rubicon models with a Dana 30 front and Dana 35 rear axle.
The fitment covers the TJ with no trim narrowing. Check fit against your vehicle’s year, model and trim first.
Not covered: Rubicon models, which G2 excludes, and Wranglers of other generations such as the YJ, JK or JL. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.
Installation notes
Both TJ differentials have to be opened to fit the gears, and each needs pinion depth, backlash and contact pattern set correctly; a shop is the usual route. Take it easy while the new 4.56 gears wear in.
With matched installation kits in the box, the front and rear can be done together.
