Description

Overview

The G2 JK metric CORE 44 rear axle with a 4.88 ratio and ARB Air Locker is a complete rear Dana 44 for 2007 and up Jeep Wrangler JK models. It uses the new generation Dana 44 JK 8.8-inch gear design in a housing built to carry heavier loads than a stock Dana 30 or Rubicon Dana 44.

The rear axle is built with USA made Placer Chromalloy axle shafts, 35 spline, and a factory style flange pinion yoke. Its carrier uses metric Rubicon style bearings.

G2 built this housing for 2007 and up Jeep JK Wranglers to handle the heavy loads that would normally bend a stock Dana 30 or Rubicon Dana 44. The rear housing carries heavy duty 1/4 inch laser cut brackets, 3 inch diameter, 5/16 inch DOM tubes and reinforcing ribs.

Integrated skid plates on the lower control arm mounts add protection, while heavy duty forged bearing caps and spanner nuts handle the carrier. A heat-treated aluminum differential cover with cooling fins covers the gears, and the ARB Air Locker is fitted to the 4.88 gearing.

Key features

  • 4.88 gear ratio with an ARB Air Locker
  • Metric Rubicon style carrier bearings
  • USA made Chromalloy axle shafts, 35 spline Placer
  • Factory style flange pinion yoke
  • Integrated skid plates on the lower control arm mounts
  • Heavy duty forged bearing caps and spanner nuts

Living with an air locker

An air locker locks both rear wheels together on demand, which helps when one wheel loses traction. It is a useful tool off road, but on pavement it is best disengaged, since a locked rear end can make tight turns feel abrupt and wear tires faster. Drivers who run larger tires or a taller lift often need to consider the locker and the gearing together.

The air system needs the same care as the rest of the axle. Inspect the air line where it runs along the frame for chafing, keep fittings sealed, and drain moisture from the supply. Keep the differential cover, seals and gear oil in good condition, since the locker is serviced through the same housing.

  • Disengage on pavement to avoid tight-turn binding
  • Inspect the air line for chafing near the frame
  • Drain moisture from the air supply
  • Check seals and gear oil during routine service

Vehicle fitment

It is a rear axle for 2007 and up Jeep Wrangler JK models, covering the 2007-2018 model years in the rear position.

It is not made for the front JK position or for the Wrangler JL. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

Check the rear pinion angle and driveline once the axle is in, since the gearing and lift height both affect it.

Questions & Answers

Is the 4.88 metric CORE 44 a rear axle?

Yes. It is the rear JK version, with a 4.88 gear ratio and an ARB Air Locker. The front axle is a separate product.

Does this rear axle fit a 2007 Jeep Wrangler JK?

It fits 2007 and up Jeep Wrangler JK models, so the 2007 model year is in range. Check fit against your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Does this axle use metric carrier bearings?

Yes. It uses metric Rubicon style carrier bearings, a 35 spline Placer shaft and an ARB Air Locker, so the carrier is built around that metric design.

How do I keep an air locker working reliably?

Keep the air fittings and lines sealed, drain moisture from the air supply, and cycle the locker now and then so it does not sit unused. Inspect the line where it passes the frame for chafing.

Does an air locker change how the rear axle is serviced?

Yes. Service the air components and the differential together when the cover comes off, and inspect the seals and fittings for wear. Keep the gear oil at the correct level before each trip.
