Setting up a ring and pinion
A ring and pinion is the gear pair that turns engine torque into wheel rotation at the axle, and the ratio sets how the engine and tires work together. A numerically higher ratio like this one gives quicker acceleration and more pulling force at low speed, while cruising speed and fuel use shift with it. Because the gears change how the whole driveline turns, the carrier, the axle housing and the tire size should all be considered when choosing a set.
Installation is where most gear problems start. Pinion depth, backlash and bearing preload need to be set before the carrier goes in the housing, and tooth contact should be checked on the pattern. Ring and pinion gears are usually replaced together with new pinion bearings, a pinion seal and carrier bearings, since reusing worn bearings can throw off the setup.
