Carrier and housing checks
A gear swap is a good moment to look over the carrier and axle housing, because the new ring and pinion will only run as well as the parts holding it. Carrier bearing bores should be round and aligned, and the bearing seats should show no spinning marks. Housing mounts and the axle tube should be tight and free of cracks, since flex in the housing changes the mesh under load.
Carrier type and pinion depth are also linked. Shims set the pinion position, and a shop typically adjusts them with the carrier preload until the contact pattern looks right. Lockers and limited-slip units place extra load on the gear teeth, so inspect those before the new set goes in. Keep a clean work area and replace any seals or gaskets disturbed during the job.
