Carrier rating and gear mesh
Gear mesh is the fit between the ring gear and pinion teeth, and it depends on the carrier, the bearings and the pinion depth working together. A carrier rating is a guide to the geometry the set was made for, so confirming it before the gears are unbolted saves time. A mismatch can cause poor tooth contact, noise and early wear.
Use a fresh set of carrier and pinion bearings, and clean every mating surface before assembly. A shop will normally set backlash with a dial indicator and then confirm the contact pattern with marking compound. After the first drives, listen for changes in noise and check the bolts for proper torque.
