Overview

Yoke wear and driveline setup
A pinion yoke is the link between the U-joint and the pinion gear, so it carries driveline torque and the angle loads that come with it. Wear usually shows at the U-joint bearing caps, the strap bolt holes and the splines. Loose straps, cracked yoke ears and worn splines can all cause clunks, vibration or a joint that binds, so the yoke should be inspected whenever a joint is replaced.
This strap and bolt design clamps to the pinion shaft, so the straps, bolts and pinion nut should be checked for tightness after installation and again after the first few drives. When choosing a replacement, the spline count, pinion shaft diameter and U-joint series should all match, since a yoke with a similar look can still fit the wrong shaft. Replacing the U-joint at the same time is common practice.
