Description

Overview

The Omix-Ada 18019.01 is a steering column shaft bearing for the lower shaft on Jeep CJ5, CJ7, Scrambler and Wrangler YJ models. It is a direct fit for 1976–1983 CJ5, 1976–1986 CJ7, 1981–1985 Scrambler and 1987–1995 YJ Wrangler vehicles.

It is built to original specifications, so confirm that the lower shaft position matches your column before installing.

Key features

  • Lower shaft position
  • Built to original specifications
  • Direct-fit listing across four vehicle entries
  • Part number 18019.01 with UPC 804314029715

Lower shaft bearing wear

The lower shaft bearing supports the steering shaft where it turns inside the column housing. Its job is to keep the shaft centered and quiet while the wheel turns, so wear often shows up as a notchy feel, a faint whine or a wheel that drifts slightly off center.

On trail-driven CJ and YJ vehicles, the lower shaft takes road shock through the steering box and linkage. A worn bearing can allow the shaft to shift, which places extra load on the coupling and steering box. When replacing it, inspect the shaft journal for scoring and make sure the column housing is clean before fitting.

Fit the new bearing without forcing it past the seat, and check related steering parts such as the coupling and steering box mounts while the column is open. These parts often wear alongside the bearing, so addressing them at the same time saves a repeat job.

  • Inspect the shaft journal for scoring
  • Clean the housing before fitting
  • Check the coupling and box mounts
  • Recheck wheel centering after the first drives

Questions & Answers

Is the 18019.01 bearing for the upper or lower shaft?

It is for the lower shaft. The position is lower, and the fit covers CJ5, CJ7, Scrambler and YJ Wrangler models only, so check your year and model before ordering.

Does this bearing fit a Jeep Cherokee XJ?

No. The bearing covers CJ5, CJ7, Scrambler and YJ Wrangler models, not the Cherokee XJ. Check your year, model and trim before confirming a match.

How does the 18019.01 bearing compare with the 18019.03 kit?

The 18019.01 is a lower-shaft steering column bearing, and it covers the same four vehicle entries as the 18019.03 kit. Compare the two part descriptions to choose the one that matches your installation.

What signs show the lower shaft bearing is worn?

A notchy or rough feel when turning, a faint whine from the column, or a wheel that drifts off center can all point to wear. Inspect the shaft and housing while the column is open. Replace the bearing if the play or noise remains after the other parts are checked.
