Cat-back care and checks
A cat-back system bolts onto the pipe that runs from the catalytic converter to the tailpipe, so the rubber hangers and clamps carry most of the load. On a pickup that sees rough roads and bed loads, these parts are the first to wear. Check them at each oil change or tire rotation for cracks, sagging and loose clamps, and tighten any fasteners that have backed off.
Exhaust heat is the main stress on any tailpipe end. Look at the welds and joints for soot streaks, which point to a leak, and listen for ticking at cold start. A small leak near the manifold can change the tone and throw off the feel of the throttle, so address it early. Keeping the tip clean with mild soap helps the black finish last.
