Overview

The Alloy USA Dana 44 rear axle shaft, part 21147, is a 30 spline replacement shaft for either the driver or passenger rear position. It fits 1972–1975 Jeep CJ applications. Confirm your CJ model and year before ordering.

Alloy USA makes the shaft from 1541H or 4140 steel, heat treated and induction hardened. It is designed for twice the tensile strength of stock and is up to 35% stronger. Bearings, seals and studs are not included, so those parts need to be sourced separately.

Checking the axle before you start

Dana 44 rear shafts see most of their stress when the axle is loaded through a turn or a rock climb, so the shaft and the differential side gear need to work together. Before you start, check the axle housing, the bearing bore and the brake components, since they all affect how the shaft is removed and fitted.

Because bearings, seals and wheel studs are not supplied, plan the job around new parts. Replace the seal when the shaft is out, check the bearing for play and wipe the axle tube clean before fitting. Tighten the wheel studs and recheck the hub after the first short drive. Keep the old parts until the new shaft is installed, so you can compare spline wear and bearing condition.
