Platform racks versus crossbars

A platform rack is a flat cargo surface made of slats or rails that spans most of the roof. Compared with plain crossbars, a platform carries bulky loads securely, gives plenty of tie-down points, and acts as a base for accessories such as lights, awnings, shovels, jack holders, and traction boards. Base racks are a simpler frame with guard rails, sold in specific sizes like 61 by 51 inches.

What is in this category

  • Platforms: complete flat racks in various sizes, such as 60 by 54 inches.
  • Side and front rails: rails that surround the platform to contain loads and give clamp points.
  • Jack holders and brackets: mounts that hold a Hi-Lift style jack on the platform rail.
  • Ratchet grabs and accessories: hardware to secure loads and add more gear.
  • Vehicle-specific racks: designs that integrate with a factory or aftermarket roof, such as a soft or hard top.

Choosing a platform

Begin with the roof. Factory rails, bare roof, soft top, and hardtop each need a different mounting approach, and some vehicles need a dedicated leg kit. Compare the platform size with your roof length and width, and keep in mind that overhang can interfere with the tailgate or a rear door opening. Weight matters twice: the rack's own weight and the maximum load rating. Look for both dynamic and static load figures from the manufacturer, and confirm the roof's own limit in the owner's manual, which may be lower than the rack's rating.

Fitting and use

Follow the instructions for assembly, spacing, and torque, and recheck the fasteners after the first few trips. Seal any holes drilled in the roof, and check for water leaks. A loaded roof raises the center of gravity, increases wind noise, and decreases fuel economy, so keep the heaviest items low and centered, and slow down on side slopes. Make sure the overall height clears garages, trails, and branches. Secure the cargo with straps rated for the load, and use a jack holder only with a jack that fits the bracket.

Wind deflectors and fairings can reduce noise. Always confirm fitment for your exact year, make, model, and roof type with the manufacturer's specifications.

Measuring and accessories

Measure the roof length and width along with the distance to any antenna, sunroof, or air deflector that the platform has to clear, and verify that the rack, when mounted, will let your sunroof open. Keep in mind the weight of everything you plan to mount, including the awning, lights, jack, and storage boxes, and add them together before comparing against the load rating. Spread the weight evenly and use the platform's slots for T-bolt accessories, which are usually stronger than clamping onto a round tube. Inspect the slats and fasteners for cracks and loosening, and rinse off salt after winter driving. If a rack rattles, check the fasteners and the pads before assuming it is defective.

Check the rack's height against your garage, parking structures, and trail clearances, and remember that gear piled on top adds to that height, so measure the fully loaded vehicle before you drive under a low obstacle.

Base and Platform Racks FAQ

What is the difference between a platform rack and a roof basket?

A platform is a flat surface made of slats or rails that can hold flat or bulky loads and accessories. A basket has raised sides that contain loose cargo. Platforms are more modular for mounting gear.

How much weight can a platform rack hold?

Check both dynamic and static ratings from the rack maker, and compare them with the roof limit in your owner's manual. The lowest figure is your limit. Dynamic ratings apply while driving.

Will a platform rack fit with my soft top?

Some racks are designed to work with specific soft tops or hardtops, while others need their own leg kit. Confirm compatibility for your vehicle and top before choosing.

Does a platform rack hurt fuel economy?

A large rack adds drag and weight, so most vehicles use somewhat more fuel and hear more wind noise. Streamlined fairings can help, and removing the rack when it is not needed will restore some efficiency.
