Checking the rear brakes
Rear pads on full-size Fords work through a range of loads, from light commuting to a loaded camper behind the truck. A heavier pad compound helps when the load is high, but the rear rotors and the parking brake mechanism also share the job. Look at both before deciding the pads are the only fix for a long pedal or fade.
Rear wheels on these trucks often show uneven pad wear when a caliper slide is stuck, so clean and lubricate the slide pins during the change. Bed the new pads in gently before a heavy tow, and keep the first trip to moderate stops. Recheck the wheel lug nuts once the truck has been driven a short distance, and watch the wear indicator on the next service.
