Description

Overview

The G2 Dana 44 YJ, XJ and TJ 30 spline rear chromoly axle kit, part 96-2033-1-30, fits 1987–2006 Jeep Wrangler YJ, Cherokee XJ and Wrangler TJ models. The chassis years covered are 87-06.

The kit is made from forged and heat treated high tensile alloy steel. Its shafts have 30 splines, and the kit is dual drilled for 5 x 4.5 and 5 x 5.5 bolt patterns. It is for drum brake applications only and is not for disc brakes.

Key features

  • Forged and heat treated high tensile alloy steel
  • 30 splines
  • Dual drilled 5 x 4.5 and 5 x 5.5 bolt patterns
  • Covers YJ, XJ and TJ chassis from 1987 to 2006
  • Not for disc brake applications

Drum brake setup and bearings

Drum brake axles need the backing plate and drum assembly to stay in line with the shaft, so take care when fitting the axle and brake hardware together. Clean the brake surfaces and inspect the wheel bearings and seals while the axle is out. Worn bearings or damaged seals can let grease into the brakes, which reduces stopping power and can cause noise.

Rear axle swaps also change the load on the differential and tire wear, so check the gear ratio and tire size against your driving. Use a fresh gasket or sealant at the axle tube and recheck the lubricant level after the first few drives. Larger tires add weight that the axle must carry, so review the bearings and retainer hardware often during the first season.

Questions & Answers

Will this kit fit a 1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ?

Yes. The kit covers 1987–1995 Wrangler YJ. Confirm your year, model and brake type before ordering, since disc brake applications need a different G2 part.

Can I use this kit with disc brakes?

No. It is for drum brake use only and is not for disc brakes. Disc brake applications need G/296-2045-1-30, so check your brake type first.

Which years does this kit cover for the XJ and TJ?

The 87-06 range covers the YJ, XJ and TJ. It fits 1987–2001 Cherokee XJ and 1997–2006 Wrangler TJ based on those chassis years.

How do I know whether the axle seals need replacing?

Look for grease on the inside of the wheel or on the brake shoes and backing plate, which means the seal is leaking. Check the axle tube and differential for oil leaks as well. A seal that leaks should be replaced before the lubricant runs low and the bearings wear.

Should I replace the bearings at the same time as the axle shafts?

Often yes. Bearings and seals are part of the same rear axle work, and a new shaft with worn bearings can wear quickly. Inspect the bearings for roughness, play or heat marks, and replace any that show wear during the swap.
