Overview
The 16521.02 is a pinion seal for Dana 44 axles. It fits the 1972 to 1975 Jeep CJ5 and the 1988 to 1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ.
The pinion seal stops gear oil leaks at the point where the pinion shaft enters the differential, so the lubricant stays in the housing. Omix-ADA describes its seals as direct OE replacements.
Checking for seal leaks
A pinion seal leak usually shows as gear oil on the housing face, the back of the pinion yoke or the underside of the axle. Clean the area and check the level after a short drive, since a slow weep can look worse than it is. Oil that keeps appearing after cleaning means the seal lip or the yoke surface needs attention.
Seal replacement goes faster with the right tools, a fresh pinion nut and a clean housing face. Keep gear oil at the correct level after the job, and inspect the yoke for grooves before reinstalling the seal. Tighten the pinion nut in controlled steps and check rotating drag, since a seal pulled too tight will heat up and wear quickly.
