Types of soft tops

Soft tops differ by how they open and how complete they are. Listings in this branch use these terms:

  • Replace-a-Top and complete replacement tops restore a worn factory-style top using the existing frame or a new one.
  • Supertop styles have a frame and a fold-back design that is easier to operate.
  • Trektop styles have a removable or sliding fabric panel over the front seats, giving a partial open roof.
  • Bowless or frameless tops use a flat-back design without the bows that cross the roof.

A hybrid design combines soft and hard elements.

Fabric and windows

Fabric is a major factor. Sailcloth, twill and diamond-pattern vinyl-coated materials are common, and each has a distinct look and feel. Colors shown here include black diamond, black twill, spice, oak tan, granite gray and navy blue.

Windows may be tinted, clear or absent in a given listing. Clear vinyl windows scratch and haze over time, so many people choose tinted or reinforced types. Zip-out or roll-up windows help ventilation.

Doors and hardware

Some tops include upper door skins, and some say doors not included. Hardware is included in some listings and not in others, so read the details if you are replacing an old top. Frame, bows and header hardware can be reused if they are in good shape, but worn parts are worth replacing.

Fit, care and installation

Soft tops are vehicle-specific. Confirm fitment for your exact year, make, model, and two-door or four-door configuration, because a JK, JL and Bronco each use different tops. Compare against the manufacturer's specifications and look for notes about the factory frame or sound bar.

Installation is usually doable at home with helpers and patience. Warm weather makes the fabric easier to stretch and seat. Keep the top clean with a mild soap, protect clear windows with a soft cloth when folding, and use fabric protectant to extend life. Avoid driving with a half-installed top. Local rules cover open-roof and window-tint use, so check regulations in your state.

If your existing top is simply dirty or has a small tear, cleaning and patching may be enough. A full replacement makes sense when the fabric is stretched, leaking at the seams or the stitching has failed, or when the windows are too cloudy to see through.

Measuring, matching hardware and mistakes to avoid

Before ordering, identify your exact vehicle generation and door count, and note whether you have a factory sound bar, a roll cage or an aftermarket accessory such as a light bar that could interfere with the top. Check whether the product is sold as the fabric skin alone or as a complete top with frame, since the price and the amount of work differ greatly.

  • Inspect the old frame for bent bows and worn pivots; a new skin over a tired frame will not seal well.
  • Check that the tailgate bar, header latches and window tracks are in good shape.
  • Do not install a top in cold weather if you can avoid it, because the fabric is stiff and can crease.
  • Leave a new top up in the sun for a day or two so that the fabric relaxes and seats before final adjustment.

Soft Tops FAQ

What is the difference between a Supertop and a Trektop?

A Supertop is a full soft top with a frame that folds back. A Trektop has a sliding or removable fabric panel above the front seats while the rest of the top stays up, giving a partial open roof.

Can I install a soft top myself?

Many owners do. It takes patience, a warm day and often a second person. Follow the instructions, and check whether your listing includes the hardware.

Do I need new door skins with a new top?

Not necessarily. Some tops come with upper door skins, and others do not. Choose based on the condition of your current skins and whether they match the new fabric.

How do I keep clear windows from hazing?

Avoid dry wiping and folding the windows sharply, especially in the cold. Clean with a soft cloth and a plastic-safe cleaner, and fold with a cloth between layers.
