How power running boards work
Each board is driven by a small electric motor in a housing under the vehicle. A control module monitors the door switches, so the step extends when you open a door and retracts when you close it. When retracted, the board tucks up near the body, which helps preserve ground clearance and reduces the damage risk on trails compared with fixed running boards. Many systems also have an obstruction sensor so a step does not move if something is in the way.
What to compare
- Length: Cab-length boards serve the cab doors only, while longer boards cover crew cabs and extended cabs. Choose the length for your cab style.
- Finish: Black is common, and finishes include powder coat or anodized surfaces. Check the tread pattern for grip.
- Weight capacity: The step's rated load is listed by the maker.
- Wiring: Many kits are plug-and-play with vehicle-specific harnesses, while some require splicing into door switch wires.
- Lights and controls: Some have courtesy lights and manual override.
Fitment
These kits are designed for specific models, cab styles, bed lengths and years, with mounting brackets that fit factory points. Confirm fitment for your exact year, make and model and check the manufacturer's specifications. Vehicle options, such as factory running boards, can change the fitment, so read the notes in the product details.
Installation and care
Installation is usually done under the vehicle with hand tools and basic wiring, and many kits take a few hours. Torque the brackets to specification, route the harness away from heat and moving parts and test the movement. Because a moving step can pinch fingers, keep hands clear while testing. If you are not comfortable with vehicle wiring, a professional installer is a good choice. Rinse the boards after winter driving or off-road use, since salt and grit can slow the mechanisms, and keep the motor housings clear of debris.
Weather plays a role in long-term reliability. Mud, ice and road salt can build up in the linkage and slow the motor, so wash under the vehicle regularly and keep moving parts clear of packed debris. If a board becomes stuck in cold weather, check for ice before assuming a failure, and avoid forcing a step by hand unless the manual allows it.
Wiring, operation and common mistakes
Power boards draw current in short bursts when they extend and retract, so a solid ground and a correctly sized fuse are important. Plug-and-play harnesses help, but check every connector for tight seating and apply dielectric grease to guard against corrosion. Route wires away from the exhaust and secure them with loom and ties.
- Do not step on a board while it is moving.
- Do not exceed the weight rating of the step.
- Do not wash the undercarriage with a high pressure jet aimed directly at motor seals.
Test the operation with each door, including a rear door on crew cab models, and confirm the steps retract before you drive off. If the vehicle has a lift or larger tires, check that the retracted board has enough clearance and that the extended step is at a usable height for passengers.

Power Running Board FAQ
Do power running boards need wiring?
Yes. They need power and a door signal. Many kits include a plug-and-play harness for specific vehicles, while others tie into door switch wires. Follow the instructions and use a fuse as specified.
Can power running boards be used off-road?
They retract close to the body, which helps with clearance, but the housings can still be hit by rocks. Keep them clean and inspect them after rough trails.
What happens if a power step stops working?
Many systems have a manual override, a fuse or a reset to check. If a step stays down or up, check the fuse, the connectors and debris first, then consult the manufacturer.
How do I choose the right length?
Match the board to your cab style. Cab-length boards suit regular cabs, while crew cab and extended cab models need boards that cover the door openings. Confirm the specifications for your model.
