Description

Overview

The Rubicon Express RE1158 is a front sway bar end link extension. It is a non-disconnect style end link intended for vehicles that are driven mostly on the road, and the link can be removed for improved off-road flex. It is non-greasable and has a direct-fit design.

The RE1158 is a different part number from the RE1145 extended front end link, so confirm the part number on the box before ordering.

Key features

  • Extended front sway bar end link
  • Non-disconnect style
  • Can be removed for improved off-road flex
  • Non-greasable
  • Direct-fit design as listed

Before you install

Front end links control how the sway bar moves as the front axle cycles, so a longer link changes the bar angle at ride height and at full droop. Once the link is in, look at how the bar sits side to side. An uneven angle can load the bushings unevenly and wear them faster than expected.

Because this link is non-greasable, the bushings are maintained by inspection rather than by lubrication. Check for cracking, play or torn boots every time the tires come off, and replace worn bushings before they allow the link to knock or clunk. Keep the fasteners torqued and re-check them after the first few trail runs.

  • Measure the sway bar angle before and after the install
  • Look for bushing cracks or play at each service interval
  • Check clearance at full droop and full compression
  • Re-torque fasteners after the first trail runs

Installation notes

Front end links change the sway bar position at the new height, so check the bar angle and the link clearance after the install. Because the link is non-greasable, the bushings are not serviced with grease after the install.

Questions & Answers

Is the RE1158 the same as the RE1145?

No. The RE1158 and the RE1145 are different part numbers. The RE1158 is the part being sold, so confirm the part number before ordering.

Can the RE1158 be removed off-road?

Yes, the link can be removed for improved off-road flex. Because it is a non-disconnect style link, removal means taking off the whole link rather than releasing a disconnect.

Is the RE1158 greasable?

No. The link is non-greasable, so the bushings are not serviced with grease after installation. Check the grease service needs of the rest of the front suspension instead.

How can I tell if a sway bar end link needs replacing?

Look for play at the ball joints, cracked or split bushings, and a knocking noise over bumps or during articulation. Replace a link that shows any of these signs, and check the other end link at the same time so both sides wear evenly.

Does removing the link affect steering or handling on the road?

Removing a link disconnects that side of the sway bar, so body roll and cornering stability will change. Reinstall the link before returning to regular road use, and confirm the bar is secured before driving at speed.
