Checking the hub before fitting
An output shaft hub carries drive torque from the transfer case to the axle, so its splines, bearing surfaces and mounting face all need to be in good condition. On older CJ and Willys vehicles these parts are often well past their original service life, which makes inspection a sensible first step before any repair.
When the hub is removed, look for rounded splines, cracks around the hub body, and grooves where a seal or bearing has been running. Clean the mating surfaces and check for flat spots before reinstalling. Replacing the output seal and any worn axle bearings at the same time is common practice, since access is the most work.
