Inspection before reassembly
Front and rear differential covers see different loads, and the gasket is only one part of a sealed housing. Before reinstalling a cover, check the flange for nicks, bending or old residue, since even a small high spot can cause weeping. A clean, flat surface lets the gasket compress evenly around the full bolt pattern.
Gear oil leaks often show up after the first few hundred miles, so check the cover, fill plug and drain plug once the vehicle has been driven. If the axle has been opened for a fluid change, this is a good time to inspect the carrier seals and pinion seal as well, since they are often replaced in the same job.
