Power steering shaft considerations
A power steering shaft connects the column to a steering gear that is assisted by hydraulic pressure. The shaft does not supply the assist, but it carries the input the gear responds to, so slop or binding in the shaft shows up as vague centering or a feel that changes at speed. Heavy duty shafts are often chosen when the front end has been raised or fitted with larger tires.
When the pump, hoses and gear are healthy, a clunk or rattle at the column usually points to the joints or pinch bolts in the shaft. Check for play with the engine running and the wheels straight, then compare the feel with the other joints. Keep the hydraulic fluid level and condition in mind during the swap, since low fluid can make a steering problem seem like a shaft problem.
- Check for play at the wheel with the engine running
- Inspect the joints and pinch bolts before replacing the gear
- Look for hose or fluid leaks near the gear and pump
