Key features

  • Inner pinion bearing cone
  • AMC Model 20 and 8.25 listed
  • Sits in the inner position

Pinion bearing setup

The inner pinion bearing supports the pinion shaft inside the carrier, and its preload has a direct effect on how the ring and pinion teeth meet. Too little preload lets the pinion move under load, which can damage the gear set. Too much preload overheats the bearings and shortens their life. Because of this, the setup is a job for someone experienced with gear work.

When a bearing is replaced, the carrier and the matching cup should be checked and cleaned, and the gear mesh should be confirmed after the pinion is set. Pinion shims and bearing spacers are often replaced along with the cone when the gear set is opened up.

  • Whine from the differential that changes with load
  • Heat at the pinion area after driving
  • Leaking pinion seal near the front of the axle
  • Rough rotation of the pinion by hand

Questions & Answers

Does this bearing fit an 8.25 axle?

The short description lists AMC Model 20 and 8.25 for this inner pinion bearing cone. Check the axle size on your vehicle before installing it, since the Model 20 and 8.25 axles are both named.

Which Jeep models are listed?

It fits the 1991–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), 1976–1983 CJ-5, 1976–1986 CJ-7 and J10, 2002–2007 Liberty (KJ) and 1981–1985 Scrambler. Wrangler and Grand Cherokee models are not covered.

Is this the outer bearing?

No. It is the inner pinion bearing cone, since the position is inner. The outer pinion bearing is a separate part, so check the position before installing.

What happens if the pinion preload is wrong?

Preload that is too low can let the pinion shift under load and damage the gear teeth. Preload that is too high overheats the bearings and shortens their life. Either way, a noise or heat problem tends to show up within a short time of driving.

Are pinion shims replaced with the bearing?

Shims and spacers are often replaced when the pinion bearing is opened up, because they set the position of the gears and the preload. Reusing worn parts can make the setup harder to get right. Check them before reassembly.
