Description

Overview

The Trail Gear 140181-1-KIT is an inner axle wheel bearing seal for the solid front axle on the 1979–1985 Toyota Pickup and 1984–1985 Toyota 4Runner.

It is a good idea to change the inner axle seal whenever a Birfield joint is replaced, which keeps the knuckles clean of weeping oil. It also suits a tool box for trail side repairs.

It fits 79-85 Toyota solid front axles.

The Birfield joint is the constant-velocity joint at the end of the Toyota solid front axle, and its inner seal sits where the axle shaft passes into the knuckle. Sold as kit number 140181-1-KIT, it covers the 79-85 solid front axles, along with the 4Runner and Pickup models. Compare the new seal with the old one before installing, since the diameter should match.

Key features

  • Wheel bearing seal
  • Fits 79-85 Toyota solid front axles, per Trail Gear
  • Suited to replacement during a Birfield joint change
  • Front position
  • Direct fit

Birfield joint and seal care

A Birfield joint wears from the inside, and grease that escapes around the inner seal can leave the knuckle and brake parts dirty. When the joint is pulled, inspect the axle shaft splines and the knuckle bore for wear, and clean old sealant or grease from the mating surfaces. A fresh seal sitting on a dirty surface can still weep, so cleanliness matters as much as the part itself.

On a solid front axle the seals are easy to check during any axle service. Look for oil on the inside of the wheel, a grimy knuckle or a shaft that slips in the knuckle. Carrying a spare seal and basic hand tools on trail trips makes a field repair practical if the seal fails.

Questions & Answers

When should the Trail Gear 140181-1-KIT seal be replaced?

Trail Gear says to change the inner axle seal at the same time as a Birfield joint, which helps keep the knuckles clean of weeping oil.

Which Toyotas use the 140181-1-KIT?

The 1984–1985 4Runner and the 1979–1985 Pickup. It fits 79-85 Toyota solid front axles, so confirm your vehicle's year, model and trim before ordering.

Is the 140181-1-KIT a front seal?

Yes. The position is front, and the seal is made for a solid front axle, so it is not for a rear axle.

What signs show the inner axle seal has failed?

Oil on the inside of the wheel or on the knuckle is the usual sign. Grime collecting on the knuckle, or a shaft that feels loose, also points to a seal that is no longer holding grease. Replace it before the joint runs dry.
