Setting bearing end play
Shims set how far the axle bearing sits in its bore, and the end play they leave determines whether the bearing runs smoothly. Because the shim thickness changes end play in small steps, the right stack is found by measuring rather than guessing. Keep the old shim stack together as you remove it so the starting point is recorded before any change.
Clean every shim and the bearing surfaces before reassembly, since a bit of grit can shift the measurement. Stack the thicknesses to reach the needed value, then recheck end play after the final assembly. Bearings, seals and axle hardware are not part of this set, so plan to buy them separately.
