Pinion seal basics
A pinion seal keeps gear oil inside the differential where the driveshaft yoke enters the housing. Leaks at this seal usually show as oil around the front of the differential, often more noticeable after hard driving or high-water crossings. Because the seal sits between the driveline and the gears, it is often replaced with the yoke and bearing work.
Replacing the pinion seal involves removing the yoke, so plan for the pinion preload and yoke nut torque to be set correctly. Take care not to overtighten the yoke nut, since that can change bearing preload. Check the gear oil level after the install, and inspect the yoke sealing surface for grooves or pitting before fitting the new seal.
- Inspect the yoke sealing surface for wear
- Use a new yoke nut and crush sleeve where the design calls for them
- Check gear oil level after installation
