Overview
The Smittybilt 2904 is a 4 inch drop ball mount, part of the company’s line of drop ball mounts for towing. It is a Class III hitch rated for up to 6,000 lbs gross trailer weight and 600 lbs tongue weight, and it fits 2 by 2 inch receivers.
The mount is made from hammer forge hardened Q235 steel. Robotic welding and reinforced gussets are used to increase accuracy and strength, and the tough powder coat finish is intended to resist corrosion and rust.
The drop is 4 inches, and the ball hole is listed at 1 inch. The shorter drop of this version is one of several drop heights in the line, so the drop should match the height of your trailer coupler.

Matching the drop to your trailer
A drop ball mount lowers the ball so the trailer sits level when it is hitched. Measure the trailer coupler height with the vehicle and trailer on level ground, then compare it with the ball height. A mismatch can cause the rig to sag or the trailer to tilt, which affects braking and steering.
Tongue weight matters as much as the gross rating. Keep the load balanced over the axles, and check the hitch pin and clip before every trip. Over time, bolts and pins can loosen under vibration, so inspect the mount and ball after the first few tows and after rough roads. Weld joints and coating should be checked for chips or rust. Use a ball of the correct size for the trailer coupler.
