Key features

  • Rear frame crossmember
  • 1/8 inch thick steel
  • Welding required
  • Unpainted finish
  • Crossmember included

Signs of a tired crossmember

A rear crossmember carries the rear of the frame and supports components that move with the axle and suspension. Over time, the metal can thin where moisture collects, and the welds can crack from flex and vibration. Look under the vehicle for bulging, bent sections and gaps where the crossmember meets the frame.

Off-road use puts repeated stress on the frame, so inspect the crossmember after rough trips. Tap the metal with a hammer to find soft spots, and check the mounts for cracks or loose fasteners. Anything that moves or shows cracking should be dealt with before the vehicle is driven hard again.

  • Check welds for hairline cracks
  • Look for thin or flaking metal
  • Confirm mounts sit tight and undamaged

Questions & Answers

Does this crossmember fit a 1978 Jeep CJ5?

Yes. It fits the 1976–1983 Jeep CJ5 in its listed versions, so a 1978 model falls within those years. The fit covers Base, Golden Eagle, Laredo, Limited and Renegade versions.

Is welding needed to install it?

Yes. Welding is required for installation, and the crossmember is unpainted, so it should be painted after installation. The shock mounts and pinion snubber bracket are not included in the kit.

How thick is the steel?

The steel is 1/8 inch thick. The crossmember is included, but the shock mounts and pinion snubber bracket are not, so those parts need to be obtained separately before installation.

When is it better to replace a rear crossmember than repair it?

Replace it when cracks run through the metal, the section is thinned by rust, or the mounts have pulled out of shape. Small surface rust can be ground and treated, but structural cracks near welds generally call for replacement and a clean fit to the frame.

Should the shock mounts be replaced at the same time?

Often yes, when they show cracks, wear or distortion. The shock mounts are not included, so inspect them before installation and plan to source them separately if they need replacement.
