Overview

Seal fit and front hub care
A hub bearing seal does two jobs: it holds lubricant around the bearing and blocks water and grit from reaching the rollers. On a Dana 44 front axle, the seal sits in the hub where road spray and mud collect, so it wears faster than a seal on a protected rear hub. Replacing it with the hub off gives a good chance to inspect the bearing and race.
Before installing, clean the seal bore and check for rust or grooves that could let water past the new seal. Drive the seal in square with a suitable tool, and confirm its lip faces the bearing. On the Wagoneer SJ, the seal is one of several parts that affect hub bearing life, so keep the hub grease topped up and check it at each service.
