Overview
The Crown Automotive J5359703 is a front wheel seal for the Dana 44 front inner hub. It fits the 1974 to 1983 Jeep Cherokee SJ, the 1974 to 1986 J10 and J20, the 1974 to 1990 Wagoneer SJ and the 1984 to 1991 Grand Wagoneer SJ.
A front wheel seal keeps grease in the hub bearing and keeps dirt and water out of the hub. This one is a front inner hub seal for a Dana 44 axle.
Hub seal care
A front wheel seal holds grease in the hub bearing and keeps water and grit out of the hub. When the seal lip hardens or the sealing surface wears, lubricant can leak onto the brake area, and moisture can reach the bearing. Early detection can prevent bearing damage, so look at the hub each time the front brakes or wheel bearings are serviced.
Seal replacement is often combined with bearing service. Clean the hub bore, inspect the bearing race for wear, and check the sealing surface on the axle for grooves. Install the seal evenly and without damage to the lip. Bearing preload should then be set using the factory procedure, and the wheel should turn smoothly with no rough feel or drag.
- Check for grease on the brake or inside of the wheel
- Inspect the bearing and race when the seal is out
- Keep the seal lip clean and undamaged during installation
- Recheck wheel play after the first few drives
