Overview
The Dana Spicer 42737 is a small pinion seal slinger for Dana 60, Dana 61 and Dana 70 axles. It installs between the outer pinion bearing and the pinion seal to limit how much oil reaches the seal, which helps prevent pinion seal leaks.
Key features
- Installs between the outer pinion bearing and the pinion seal
- Limits the oil that reaches the pinion seal
- Helps prevent oil spray and flooding of the pinion seal
- Fits front and rear axle positions.
Installing and checking a slinger
A pinion seal slinger works by flinging oil away from the seal lip, so less oil sits against the seal. Because it sits between the outer pinion bearing and the pinion seal, its position matters, and it should be seated square against its spacer during pinion assembly. Check that it turns freely and is not bent before the seal is fitted.
Oil leaks at the pinion often start with a worn seal or a loose pinion nut rather than the slinger alone. When inspecting, look for oil on the pinion yoke, the housing face and the area near the front brakes. Replace the pinion seal and slinger together when the pinion is opened, since both are exposed to the same oil and wear.
- Confirm the slinger sits square on the pinion
- Check the pinion nut after the first drives
- Inspect for oil on the yoke and housing face
