Description

Overview

The Dana Spicer 706008X is an open differential carrier case for the Dana 30 front axle, sold as a case only with no internals. It is an O.E. style carrier used when the gear landing must change, or when a worn or broken carrier needs replacing while the spider gears stay in use.

It is intended for use with 3.73 and up gears. Its Dana 30 application points to the Wrangler TJ front axle.

Key features

  • O.E. style open differential carrier
  • For use with 3.73 and up gears
  • Case only, with no internals
  • Replacement for a worn or broken carrier
  • Supports a different ring gear landing for gear changes

Gear ratio and setup

A carrier case is only a housing, so the ring gear, pinion and internals determine how the axle performs. When the gear landing changes, the new case break has to match the ring gear and pinion set, or the gears will not mesh correctly. Setting the ring gear to pinion backlash and checking the contact pattern should be done before the axle is returned to service.

Carrier bearings and pinion seals are often replaced when a carrier is swapped, because they are disturbed during reassembly. Inspect the old bearings for pitting or roughness before reusing them. Fresh gear oil after a carrier change keeps debris from the old unit out of the new gears.

  • Confirm the ring gear ratio before building
  • Check backlash and contact pattern before the first drive
  • Replace carrier bearings and pinion seals when disturbed

Vehicle fitment

It fits the Dana 30 front axle of the 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ.

Wrangler YJ, LJ, JK and JL models are different generations and are not covered here. Confirm your vehicle’s year, model and trim before ordering.

Installation notes

The case has no internals, so the ring gear and differential internals must be fitted to it before the carrier goes into the axle. Gear setup and backlash checks are best left to a professional.

Questions & Answers

Does the Dana Spicer 706008X fit a Jeep Wrangler TJ?

Yes. It is a Dana 30 carrier for the Wrangler TJ, covering 1997 to 2006 models. Confirm the axle and year before fitting it.

Does this carrier include the internals?

No. It is case only with no internals, so the ring gear and differential internals must be fitted separately. The carrier is intended for use with 3.73 and up gears.

What gear ratios does this carrier support?

It is for use with 3.73 and up gears, which means ring gear ratios of 3.73 or numerically higher. Confirm your ring gear ratio before building the carrier.

Should the carrier bearings be replaced during a carrier swap?

Usually yes. Bearings are disturbed when a carrier is removed and refitted, and any wear that is hard to see can shorten the life of a new gear set. Inspect the bearing bores as well.

Does a carrier change call for fresh lubricant?

Yes. Fill the axle with a gear oil suited to your gear set and check the level after the first drives. A fresh fill keeps debris from the old carrier out of the new gears.
