Description

Overview

The Power Stop Autospecialty B670 is a rear drum brake shoe set for the 1991–2001 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) and the 1993–1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee (ZJ). It is a semi-metallic replacement shoe with a black rust-resistant coat, built to meet or exceed OEM specifications.

The shoes are post-cured for more brake power and a shorter break-in, and they are precision arc ground to match the drum. The chamfered edges keep braking quiet and free of chatter.

Key features

  • Semi-metallic friction material, post-cured for more brake power and shorter break-in
  • Made from 100% new steel with a rust-resistant black coat
  • Asbestos-free and copper-free construction
  • Chamfered shoe edges to reduce chatter and noise
  • Precision arc ground for exact drum fitment
  • Designed to meet or exceed OEM specifications
  • Backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty from Power Stop

Cherokee rear drum upkeep

On a Cherokee XJ, rear drum shoes are often replaced together with the wheel cylinders and hold-down hardware, since these parts wear at similar rates. Clean the backing plate and check the parking brake cable for free movement before fitting. Make sure the return springs are not stretched, because weak springs can hold the shoes off the drum and reduce braking.

The semi-metallic compound on this shoe needs a proper bedding procedure. Make a few firm stops from moderate speed to transfer an even layer of friction material to the drum, then let the brakes cool before heavy use. Hot, unbedded shoes can glaze and feel weak even when the parts are new.

  • Stretched or cracked return springs
  • Seized parking brake cable
  • Glazed or uneven lining after the first trips

Installation notes

Drum brake shoes are normally replaced as an axle set. The semi-metallic compound is post-cured for a shorter break-in, so follow the bedding procedure for new shoes after fitting. These shoes are for the rear axle only, so the front brakes use a different part.

Questions & Answers

Will the Power Stop B670 fit a Jeep Cherokee XJ?

Yes, for 1991–2001 models. It also fits the 1993–1994 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) as a rear drum shoe, and it is a direct fit for both applications.

Does the B670 include hardware?

Yes. The shoes are precision arc ground for the drum and include all hardware, so a separate spring kit should not be needed. Check the package contents against your installation before starting.

Are these shoes asbestos-free?

Yes. The shoes are asbestos-free and copper-free, using a semi-metallic compound on a black-coated steel shoe. The black coat is there to resist rust on the steel body during service.

Is the B670 a front or rear shoe?

Rear. The B670 is a rear drum brake shoe set, sold as a direct-fit replacement for the Cherokee XJ and Grand Cherokee ZJ applications.

Why do rear drum shoes need to be bedded in?

Bedding transfers an even film of friction material onto the drum, which gives smooth, predictable braking. Make several moderate stops before heavy use, and let the brakes cool between hard stops during the first drive.
