Gasket replacement tips
Transmission gaskets seal joints where housings, covers and cases meet, so the sealing surfaces matter as much as the gasket itself. Clean every mating face down to bare metal and check for warping or nicks before fitting new material. Using sealant only where the gasket design calls for it helps prevent blocked fluid passages and squeeze-out inside the case.
Older Jeep transmissions often show leaks at the shift cover, the side cover and the rear seal area first. When a gasket is replaced, the seals and bearings around the same opening are commonly inspected at the same time, since working on them later means a second teardown.
- Clean all sealing surfaces before installing new gasket material
- Check covers for warping with a straightedge
- Replace the rear seal when the case is open
