Output shaft and housing care
The rear extension housing carries the transfer case output shaft and its seal, so it is exposed to fluid pressure and road debris. Look for seepage around the mating surfaces and the output seal, and for play in the output shaft. Leaks at the housing often start as slow weeps that get worse over time.
When the housing is off, check the output bearing and the front case mating face as well. Clean old sealant from the surfaces before fitting a new gasket, and use a sealant type that suits your case. Driveline vibration that increases with speed can point to bearing or output problems, so check them before reinstalling. Keep the bolts tightened to the case’s required values after the first few drives.
- Check for oil seepage at the housing face
- Feel for play in the output shaft
- Inspect the output seal before reinstalling
