Overview
The Jeep 68004072AA is a pinion oil seal for the differential pinion position, offered as a factory style replacement part. A pinion seal keeps lubricant inside the differential housing where the pinion shaft exits, so it works as a sealing point at the front of the carrier.
Seal care and replacement
A pinion seal sits where the driveshaft yoke meets the front of the carrier, so it is exposed to road debris and water. Over time the lip can harden or crack, which allows gear oil to weep past the seal and collect on the yoke and driveshaft area. A worn pinion seal is often the first sign of a leak at the front of the differential.
Before installing a new seal, remove the yoke, clean the seal bore and check the yoke surface for grooves. A sealing surface that is rough or grooved will cause a new seal to leak. Fill the differential to the correct level after the job and check for seepage after the first drive.
- Check the yoke surface for grooves before pressing in a new seal
- Replace the pinion nut if it loosens during removal
- Inspect the carrier for oil residue around the seal
