Overview
The Dana Spicer Dana 44 Steel Cover, part 707014X, is a heavy duty stamped steel differential cover. Its build suits front axles, where trail impacts are common, and it can also be used in rear applications.
The cover is thicker than a normal rear cover. It comes with mounting hardware, a filler plug and a gasket.
Key features
- Heavy duty stamped steel
- Thicker than normal rear covers
- Designed for front axle use, with rear use listed
- Mounting hardware, filler plug and gasket included
- Natural finish
Choosing and fitting a steel cover
A steel cover is a common upgrade when trail use puts the differential housing at risk from rocks and debris. Steel is less likely to dent than a thin stock cover, and a stamped cover with the right gasket can seal well when the mating surface is clean and flat. Heavier covers do not change gear ratios or axle strength by themselves.
Before installing, clean the housing face and check for burrs or warping that could cause a leak. Use the gasket supplied, tighten the bolts evenly in a crisscross pattern, and fill the axle to the correct level after the cover is on. Recheck the cover and fill plug after the first few drives, since a new seal can settle in.
Inspect the cover after each trail trip for dents, bent edges or seepage. A cover that has been struck hard may need straightening or replacement to keep oil from escaping.

- Tighten bolts in a crisscross pattern
