Overview

How the hub washer works
A hub washer spreads clamping load from the nut across the hub so that the threads do not pull through or deform the hub face. Its flat surface needs to sit square against the hub, and any burr or rust pit can change how the nut torques down. Washers are small parts, but they affect how evenly the wheel bearing is preloaded.
When the hub is apart for service, inspect the washer for bending, cracks and corrosion, and clean the mating surfaces before reassembly. Replacing a worn washer costs far less than rebuilding a hub loosened by a shifting nut. Keep the washer order the same as the original assembly.
