Air injection system basics
An air injection system pumps fresh air into the exhaust ports to help the catalyst work during cold starts. When the system is removed or blocked off, the tube openings are sealed with blockoff plates so exhaust gases do not escape or draw in. Blockoff kits are most often chosen when the air pump is no longer used.
Before choosing a blockoff kit, check the gasket surface and the bolt pattern on the tube, since plates need to seal evenly. Gaskets are often replaced with the plates, and damaged threads should be repaired before tightening. Pay attention to the sealing edge, because a plate that sits crooked can leak exhaust into the engine bay.
After installing blockoff plates, start the engine and listen for exhaust leaks around the flange. Check the fasteners again after the engine has warmed up, and recheck them periodically during other exhaust service.
