Choosing trail protection
A thick differential cover is one of the few armor pieces that sits low and takes direct hits from rocks and stumps. The iron body keeps debris out of the gears, but the mounting flange and bolts carry the load of each strike. A tough cover works best alongside a solid skid plate and a clean, undamaged housing flange.
When comparing covers, look beyond thickness to fit and sealing. Confirm the mounting bolt pattern, check whether a fill plug or breather sits in the cover, and plan for a new gasket. Clean the flange, torque bolts evenly, and recheck after the first hard trail day. Powder coating helps with corrosion, so touch up chips to keep bare metal from rusting.
- Check fill and breather placement before buying
- Keep the flange free of old gasket material
- Inspect the cover after rock strikes
- Recheck gear oil level after the first trail outing
